Japan’s BAND-MAID and Mexico’s The Warning have teamed up for cross-continental collab with their new song “SHOW THEM.”
The upbeat hard rock tune sees BAND-MAID’s Saiki Atsumi and The Warning’s Daniela Villarreal trading off on vocals and duetting the soaring choruses. BAND-MAID bring a power-pop sensibility that melds well with The Warning’s harder edge, making for a seamless collab between the like-minded acts.
The collab came about after the two bands shared the bill at the Aftershock Festival back in 2022. Dany and her sisters/bandmates, drummer Paulina and bassist Alejandra, had been eager to meet BAND-AID that day, and the groups hit it off.
“Japanese rock and the rock you hear in the US and Mexico are the same genre but they sound completely different,” Daniela said in a joint interview with the bands via Billboard. “That’s the main reason why I was drawn to BAND-MAID’s music. I also like the fact that they put a very high level of technique into their music.”
Added Paulina on the collab: “[BAND-MAID drummer] Akane and I have totally different playing styles, so there were some phrases that were hard for me but I really enjoyed practicing them. BAND-MAID helped us grow and I appreciated that.”
BAND-MAID guitarist Kanami created the original demo for the track, with guitarist/singer Miku Kobato and The Warning being credited with the lyrics.
“We wanted to venture out and make a song that would bring out new aspects of each band for this single, and that’s how “SHOW THEM” came about,” said Kanami in the Billboard interview. “Everyone in The Warning made changes to the demo I made. Then we made new suggestions in response to that, and repeated the process over and over again until the song was finished.”
“SHOW THEM” was debuted by both bands back on June 12th when they shared the stage to perform the song together at the EX Theater Roppongi in Tokyo, and The Warning also hit the studio to track their parts for the recording while they were in Japan. The track will be included on BAND-MAID’s forthcoming album, Epic Narratives, out September 25th.
Meanwhile, The Warning have a handful of US headlining dates on the horizon in September and are slated to support Evanescence and Halestorm’s Fall 2024 Canadian co-headlining tour. The outing kicks off on October 15th in Vancouver, and you can get tickets here.
