16-year-old Canadian indie-pop sensation, AVIV releases her debut EP, Drowning In The Culture

AVIV releases a blissful bedroom-pop endeavor that has the potential to thrust her into the worldwide spotlight.
In her short sixteen years of life, AVIV has been on a trajectory that has the potential to thrust her into a worldwide spotlight. Having started piano lessons at six years old, AVIV’s first piano teacher scared her to practice. Add in a desire to learn guitar / develop her voice, and AVIV’s story begins as most do — practicing and performing for anyone that would watch, namely friends and family. Ten years later, and that practice is paying off.
As 2020 began and the pandemic began to take hold, AVIV would find herself relying on music more than ever. Whether listening to her favorite artists (Clairo, Lorde, and Lana Del Rey) to help get her through all the unknowns — or perfecting her craft, music was ever-present. AVIV explains how music became her lifeline, “Music became a way to convey my emotions,” she admits. “Since I won’t even talk to my friends about a lot of these things, it’s an outlet for me to talk about things I don’t talk about.”
Drowning In The Culture is the Toronto artist’s debut EP. The eight-track project is a blissful bedroom-pop endeavor that will put you in a good mood. As with most bedroom-pop projects, the pace meanders and takes its time. By the middle of the EP, feelings of warmth and comfort take hold as AVIV peacefully performs her magic.
Overwhelmingly vocal and guitar-driven, there are moments on the album in which the sixteen-year-old leans heavily on a larger ensemble. ‘Failed English’ is one of those moments. Whether backed by a full band, or just her guitar, AVIV’s voice is straightforward, fresh, and formidable. AVIV concludes, “If my song takes you somewhere emotional, there’s nothing better to me…” she leaves off. “Or, if it makes you answer a question you’ve had about your life, that would be amazing. My songs make me answer my own questions. When I release them, I hope they do the same thing for you.”
AVIV is currently on a 12-date arena tour supporting the Canadian leg of the Imagine Dragons. Drowning In The Culture is available on all streaming services.
