Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Avery Friedman releases ‘New Thing,’ the final single and title track from her upcoming debut album, out April 18th via Audio Antihero.
Produced by James Chrisman (SISTER. / CIAO MALZ) and featuring Felix Walworth (Florist / Told Slant) on drums, ‘New Thing’ follows her previously acclaimed singles ‘Flowers Fell‘ and ‘Photo Booth.’ The song reflects Friedman’s process of navigating anxiety and self-reconnection after a traumatic experience, with layered indie-folk instrumentation that mirrors the emotional depth of her storytelling.
Friedman recalls:
“I wrote ‘New Thing’ in one sitting after riding the subway home alone at night for the first time since being mugged at knifepoint months prior. I was shocked and disoriented by the anxiety I experienced doing something so routine—I felt foreign to myself. It’s one of the first of my songs that I truly loved, which is part of why I chose it as the title of my upcoming record. I’m grateful for how this song continues to bring me back into my body.”
‘New Thing’ is out now, offering a poignant glimpse into Avery Friedman’s forthcoming full-length debut. Set to release on April 18th, New Thing serves as a deeply personal debut album, encapsulating Friedman’s journey of self-discovery and catharsis. A vinyl and cassette edition will follow the digital release.
