Apple Music raises the price of its student plan subscription in the US, UK, and Canada.
Apple Music has increased the price of its student plan subscription, as reported by 9to5Mac. The monthly fee has increased from $4.99 to $5.99 in the US and Canada, with a similar jump in the UK.
While Apple hasn’t yet acknowledged the changes, the new pricing information is available on Apple Music’s website. Students subscribed to Apple Music have started seeing the price increase on their iPhone and iPad subscription pages. It’s difficult to pinpoint when Apple implemented these changes, but an archived Apple Music page shows the former price on June 21.
The price increase isn’t limited to the US, UK, and Canada. In May, Apple increased the subscription price for students across several countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Malaysia, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore.
It’s yet to be seen whether Apple plans to raise the cost for students in additional countries — but the recent price hike has notably been the first time Apple has increased the price of their subscriptions since 2015.
Apple Music’s student plan is reserved for those enrolled in a college or university and has been the most cost-effective, full-featured plan available. The $9.99/month individual and $14.99/month family plans remain unchanged in their pricing structure, as well as the $4.99/month voice plan. Students needing to save an extra buck might look to the voice plan as it offers limited access to Apple Music only through Siri, though it’s extremely limited for only a dollar less.
For students who have not yet signed up for the student plan, Apple is still giving away free pairs of Beats Flex earphones to those who qualify. The company has also been offering students a discount on select products for its annual back-to-school sale. There’s also a gift card offer for up to $150 off qualifying products.
