Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker joins Kyle Meredith to talk about her new solo album, Bright Future. Listen to the new episode above, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Lenker discusses recording much of the album in the morning in her bedroom, as well as how such a setting ultimately manifested within the songs (she even left noises from the room in the final mix). Beyond the comfortable recording environment, she also chats about how teaching a songwriting class affected her approach, explaining what she learned about herself and her abilities throughout the process.

Of the more surprising sources of inspiration for Bright Future was the 1998 film Deep Impact, which she admits has been influencing her since she was seven years old. “For years I was so scared that a comet was gonna hit. I remember it shook my reality,” she recalls. “I was just like, ‘Oh. So, at any minute, like any second?’ And I remember being so scared… I thought of this whole world ending, I thought of dying unprepared. Because you see all the people holding each other and facing their deaths as the comet comes, and I hadn’t thought of those ideas. And then suddenly, you can’t unsee things.”
