Welcome to the debut episode of In Defense of Ska Season 4, which also marks the series joining the Consequence Podcast Network! For such a momentous event, hosts Aaron Carnes and Adam Davis knew they had to go big — 311 big.
On this episode, the band’s bassist, P-Nut, joins the duo to talk everything ska, from his own place in the genre’s history to rubbing elbows with acts like Fishbone, Voodoo Glow Skulls, The Urge, Reel Big Fish, Goldfinger, and the just-reunited No Doubt. He takes a look at 311’s most ska-influenced track, “I’ll Be Here Awhile,” as well as his love for new acts who are inspired by the style, including 100 gecs.
“I’m such a fan, I’m such a nerd,” he admits. “Like, I want to understudy with Dylan [Brady], for real… I think those kids really know what they’re doing.”
Additionally, the crew dive into 311’s gig as an opener for Fugazi, covering Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Taste the Pain” at a high school talent show, and Eric Andre’s infamous “investigate 311” gag.
Listen to 311’s P-Nut chat about ska, 100 gecs, Fugazi, and more above. You can also follow the series wherever you get your podcast, or get early and ad-free episodes by joining the IDOS Patreon. Don’t forget to check out all the Consequence Podcast Network series here.
In Defense of Ska finds hosts Aaron Carnes (author of In Defense of Ska) and Adam Davis (Link 80, Omingone) standing tall to lift up the genre that’s been the butt of too many jokes for too long. They chat with people in and outside of the ska scene to tell its stories, show its pervasiveness in culture, and defend it to their last dying breath.
