Over the past few years, it’s been a difficult undertaking to narrow down our year-end list to the 15 best hip-hop albums, and we inevitably leave an unfair share of well-deserving projects on the cutting block. So in 2024, we decided to expand our countdown to 20 to provide a wider picture of a year in which headlines were dominated by a feud between two of the biggest rap stars.
With all the noteworthy albums that dropped this year, the process wasn’t any easier, but we’re happy to highlight a varied assortment of projects from the greatest rappers alive, dependable veterans, indie standouts that you should know, and fast-rising artists that may not be on your radar.
Though you can probably guess who tops the list (hint: he won a Pulitzer Prize), other selections are not so obvious and are a strong indicator that hip-hop is alive and well — despite what a certain Compton rapper had to say about the general landscape.
