Duritz opens up about the creation of “A Long December,” featured on Counting Crows’ 1996 album Recovering the Satellites. He takes us back to a pivotal moment when inspiration struck, sharing how the song flowed out of him in a single sitting; “I went back up to my place about four in the morning… and I started playing, and it just came right out. The whole song. It seemed to write itself,” he recalls.
As the song evolved, Duritz says the track became a cathartic moment for him, both personally and in his connection with audiences. “I started playing it, and it was so galvanizing… it all released,” he says. The feeling remain to this day, as he references an emotional performance of the song during a benefit concert for his pal Jesse Malin last fall.
Elsewhere in the episode, Duritz discusses his songwriting journey as well as the tolls that fame and exposure took on his mental health. “I slipped comfortably into a nice mental health breakdown,” Duritz shares. “It’s a very big change in your life to go from being aggressively anonymous to the cover of Rolling Stone… I’ve said the same thing a million times, but if you woke up on Mars, it would take you a while to get used to the gravity.”
