Few could have predicted that Nicole Kidman, an actress synonymous with icy thrillers and sweeping period dramas, would end up trading red carpets for the shadowy glow of a Queens techno club.
But that’s exactly what happened when filming Halina Reijn’s erotic thriller Babygirl, in which the Oscar-winning actress immerses herself in the pulse of underground rave culture, proving once again that her range knows no bounds. Inside Basement, the beloved nightclub tucked beneath the Knockdown Center in Queens, Babygirl finds Kidman’s character Romy navigating a labyrinth of strobe-lit rooms in search of her lover Samuel, played by Harris Dickinson.
Basement, already a mecca for New York’s underground dance aficionados, gains an added layer of mystique with Kidman’s appearance in the film. Perhaps your next late-night escapade will include an unexpected sighting of the Babygirl star.
At the 2024 GQ Men of the Year event, she casually admitted her fondness for rave culture. “I’m a small party person, but I do like a rave,” Kidman quipped to an interviewer at the time. “I told you, I’m an extreme person.”
Released Christmas Day, the A24 film is currently in theaters nationwide.
