Big Thief have announced Passional Relations, a new benefit EP to support wildfire relief efforts in Los Angeles.
Comprised of five previously-unreleased tracks recorded from 2018 to 2020, the majority of proceeds from the EP will go to the Plus1LA Fires Fund, which directly supports organizations working on the ground to address critical needs like housing, education, animal welfare, and more. The rest of the proceeds from the release will go to local musicians, artists, and community members in the Los Angeles area that were affected by the fires.
The EP can be purchased directly from Big Thief’s website as a digital download. The first four tracks on Passional Relations were all crafted during the sessions for their lauded 2022 double album, Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You. The final song, “Shadow Too,” was a demo from the band’s sessions in 2018 as they made their pair of 2019 albums. U.F.O.F and Two Hands.
“Our hearts are broken for everyone affected by the fires in California,” said Big Thief in a statement. “We’ve put together some of our favorite unreleased songs into an EP called Passional Relations, only available on our webstore, and all proceeds will go toward providing relief for those impacted by the fires in Los Angeles. Our hope is that these contributions will not only help address the crucial and immediate needs of affected communities but also help sustain the work, identity, and culture of the artists within them.”
Passional Relations serves as Big Thief’s first formal release since they parted ways with founding bassist Max Oleartchik; now just a trio, they previously served as the backing band for Tucker Zimmerman’s 2024 album Dance of Love.
