Shaboozey Defends Megan Moroney Over Misconstrued Side-Eye

Shaboozey does not want his viral reaction at the AMAs to reflect upon Megan Moroney. He firmly denounces any hateful comments about her misconstrued involvement in the side-eye.

She had nothing to do with it!!

Shaboozey, one of the biggest names in the modern landscape of country music, joined the emo cowgirl on stage at the American Music Awards on Monday night to present an award. They both followed the teleprompter as they were asked to do. It was a standard read.

Shaboozey first spoke about the role of country music in AMAs’ history and remembered Charley Pride. Moroney then acknowledged “the Carter family, who basically invented country music.” Shaboozey was caught off guard by what she said. He shot her a perplexed side-eye and awkwardly laughed before he continued on with the teleprompter read. His reaction went extremely viral.

To be completely honest, my mind immediately went to Beyonce. She adopted Jay-Z’s last name, Carter, when they got married in 2008. There has been a lot of controversy about her role in “country music” with the album Cowboy Carter. I just assumed Shaboozey was just as confused about her mention as I was.

I (like others) was completely wrong. It took me a second to realize what was actually going down.

Shaboozey was not upset with Megan Moroney!

Moroney, via the teleprompter, was talking about The Carter Family. The Carter Family is widely considered the first vocal group to become “country music” stars. They were also one of the first groups to record commercially-produced “country music” between 1927 and 1956.

However, The Carter Family was heavily influenced by African-American artists. It might even be fair to say that they got all of the success for the work of others. Lesley Riddle actually wrote most of their biggest hits, for just one example. Shaboozey’s eye roll was a reaction to his erasure and the erasure of others.

When you uncover the true history of country music, you find a story so powerful that it cannot be erased…

GOOGLE: Lesley Riddle , Steve Tartar, Harry Gay, Defoe Bailey, and The Carter Family

The real history of country music is about people coming together despite their differences, and embracing and celebrating the things that make us alike.

Unfortunately, Megan Moroney was caught up in a lot of the backlash even though she just read what she was asked to read. Some of the comments on her latest Instagram are nasty and hateful.

Shaboozey will not stand for such behavior! He posted the following response to the comments:

Just want to clear something up: my reaction at the AMAs had nothing to do with Megan Moroney! She’s an incredibly talented, hard-working artist who’s doing amazing things for country music and I’ve got nothing but respect for her.

I’ve seen some hateful comments directed at her today, and that’s not what this moment was about. Let’s not twist the message – she is amazing and someone who represents the country community in the highest light!

That settles that! Shaboozey reacted to the lack of recognition for African-American artists, not Beyonce. Megan Moroney is not to blame. Controversy settled.
