“My grandmother came to this country in 1961—I am a proud child of immigrant parents,” she said. “With dreams and dignity and hard-working hands, and I am the first American of Dominican origin to accept an Academy Award, and I know I will not be the last. I hope. The fact that I’m getting an award for a role where I got to sing and speak in Spanish—my grandmother, if she were here, she would be so delighted, this is for my grandmother.”

Saldaña spread the excitement about her Oscars win to her Instagram page, where she posed holding her radiant statuette. She captioned the post, “Wow! Winning this award is truly surreal. To be recognized among such incredibly talented women is an honor in itself, and to win for Emilia Perez, a project that means so much to me makes it even more special. This journey has been deeply personal, and I’m so grateful to everyone who supported, believed in, and poured into this with me. Thank you to The Academy for this recognition and to my amazing peers for the inspiration. This moment is one I’ll cherish forever!”
