If Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain were alive today he and skating legend Tony Hawk would be related through marriage, as Tony’s son Riley married Kurt’s daughter Francis Bean. In that hypothetical scenario, Nirvana rocker Kurt Cobain would also be a grandfather as Riley and Francis had a son last year named Ronin Walker Cobain Hawk.
Sadly, Frances Bean Cobain and the rest of the world lost Kurt way too soon. And in a recent post on Instagram Stories, Tony Hawk shared a message about how much he wished Kurt was still here so that he could see how his family blossomed.
The post was a screenshot of a 1991 ticket stub to a Nirvana concert at The Vatican. Tony Hawk wrote about that day and said “went straight from a S.U.A.S. event at Houston Skatepark to this concert in 1991. It was as transformative as live music can possibly be; we all experienced something rare and powerful that night. The world would never be the same.”
Hawk went on to say “I wish Kurt were here so he could see the incredible woman his daughter has become, meet her devoted, caring husband, and hold our wondrous grandchild.”

Tony also recently shared this image of him on a skateboard with his grandkid:
Tragically, Kurt Cobain would leave this world less than 3 years after Tony Hawk attended that concert. His daughter with Courtney Love was just 19 months old at the time.
31 years later, we live in a world that Kurt Cobain wouldn’t recognize but the thought of him getting to see that his daughter turned out to be an incredible woman and a loving mother is one that many Nirvana fans, Tony Hawk included, find solace in. I’d included messages here from X/Twitter but there are so, so many and you all get the point. Tony Hawk’s got everyone feeling emotional with his post.
Meanwhile, there has been a slight Nirvana revival in recent weeks. The surviving members of the band met on stage at Fire Aid LA to raise money for wildfire victims.
Here’s Violet Grohl, Dave Grohl’s daughter, singing ‘All Apologies’ with her dad and the other Nirvana members:
