The Feelies have returned to announce Rewind, the Garden State indie instigators’ sixth studio album. For their first release since the 2023 live collection Some Kinda Love: Performing the Music of the Velvet Underground, the influential quintet has once again centered their own guiding stars, assembling a nine-track set of covers recorded throughout their more than four-decade career. To preview the project, they’ve shared the track that inspired the collection: a rendition of Patti Smith’s “Dancing Barefoot.”

The Feelies’ jangly, infectious and propulsive take on Smith’s 1979 Wave essential dates back to sessions in New York and Jersey City, N.J., from the spring of 1988 that gave rise to Only Life, the group’s triumphant third studio album. With lead vocals from bassist Brenda Sauter, the band’s love for the song and their long-vaulted treatment of it encouraged them to find a home for it alongside eight other borrowed numbers, six of which were tracked prior to their hiatus from 1992 to 2008.

Previously released selections like The Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black” and The Beatles’ “Everybody’s Got Something To Hide (Except Me And My Monkey),” which famously appeared on The Feelies’ 1980 debut album Crazy Rhythms, are paired with unheard recordings like Bob Dylan’s “Seven Days,” The Modern Lovers’ “I Wanna Sleep In Your Arms,” The Doors’ “Take It As It Comes” and Neil Young’s “Barstool Blues,” a rousing rocker of a reading cut back in 1990 while they assembled 1991’s Time For A Witness which they’ve shared as an additional advance offering.

Rewind will arrive on June 20 via Bar/None Records and is available to pre-order now. Learn more about The Feelies at thefeeliesweb.com and listen to the Smith and Young covers below.
