Fellow Scot and musician Midge Ure paid tribute to his “old friend”.

He said: “Just about to board the British Airways flight from JFK and heard my old friend/Slik/Simple Minds drummer Kenny Hyslop has passed way.

“He lived a lively life! Huge condolences to his friends and family. He was much loved.”

Hyslop was born in Helensburgh in 1951 and played alongside Ure in band Salvation.

He joined Simple Minds in 1981 replacing then drummer Brian McGee.

The Glasgow-based band were famed for a string of hits including Don’t You and Alive And Kicking.

Scores of fans rushed online to pay tribute to the late much-loved rocker.

Another added: “Such very, very sad news. May he rest in eternal peace.”

A third wrote: “Rest in peace, Kenny. Loved your drumming.”

While one commented: “My deepest condolences to his family.”
