This is SOUND ADVICE, a weekly destination for playlists curated by Interview’s friends, enemies, and lovers. Over the past few weeks, we’ve gathered playlists from Amaarae, Dissensus, and Petey. For this week’s edition, 2012’s Miss Continental and season 15 RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Sasha Colby joined us ahead of the release of her debut single “Feel the Power,” out on Friday, and her upcoming headlining tour, “Sasha Colby: Stripped.” Colby’s reputation, and beat, precedes her: she was the first Native Hawaiian queen to appear on Drag Race, and also the first winner of Polynesian descent. But now, you can get to know Sasha Colby, the disc jockey. After creating a playlist especially for us—consisting of tracks by Whitney, Sade, and Interview regular Peggy Gou—Colby answered some of our burning questions about diss tracks, all-time faves, and what to wear when the world is ending.

———

Where do you dance? I dance anywhere and everywhere! I love to dance anywhere with a good vibe and DJ, at the club, and on stage when I’m performing. I’ve been known to dance in the backyard, I’ll dance in my chair if I have to.

What’s your dream “lip sync for your life” song, and opponent? My dream lip sync for your life song is “Run To You” by Whitney Houston. My dream opponent, and hopefully it would be a Double Shantay Stay, would be Kennedy Davenport. Kennedy can dance and she’s an amazing lip-syncer and storyteller.

What was your first concert? My first concert was Janet Jackson when I was in high school. I saw her in Hawaii during her “All For You” Tour in 2002.

Bluetooth or wired headphones? I love the Bluetooth Beats that are connected to each other, so I don’t lose the ear pods. I’ve lost so many. I love that it goes around your neck, because otherwise I’ll fall asleep and they’ll be lost.

Name your favorite artist no one knows about: Anoraak. They have a song called “Gang” that I’ve been obsessed with. I love them because it gives me fashion, it gives me Paris. I think she’s reading the boy in the actual song. It’s like a diss track, which I love.

What song do you have on repeat? Honestly, the songs I have on repeat are usually the songs I am learning to perform. Right now, the song I have on repeat is “Water” by Tyla. An album I love that I can play all the way through would be Urban Hang Suite by Maxwell. I could just play that entire album on repeat.

What is your favorite album cover of all time? Oh my goodness. My favorite album cover would have to be the cover of Kylie Minogue’s album X. I really love the eighties close-up.

What song on this playlist makes you cry? “Cannonball” by Damien Rice. Anything by Damien Rice really.

What song on this playlist makes you dance? “Feel The Power” by yours truly and Luciana! Not only does it make me feel ready for the club, but ready to conquer the world. I hope it makes you all feel the same way!

Who’s the queen of pop? And who’s the king? Janet Jackson always is the queen. Technically, Michael is the King of Pop. The Jackson family is royalty.

First drag performance you saw IRL? The first drag performance I saw in real life was in 2000 in Hawaii. It was at a birthday show for one of the drag legends, Aiko. I got to see every trans drag performer in Hawaii that night, which was sickening.

If you could work with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be? George Michael. His music was so diverse. He’s just really talented. He was an incredible songwriter, incredible vocalist, and I think I would learn a lot from him.

Who do you trust most with the aux? My friend and makeup artist, James Michael Perez.

The world is ending. What are you wearing? Besides tears, what am I wearing…? Hopefully I’m going down in a blaze of glory in YSL, and my snatched pony from Sasha Colby Hair.
