Cyndi Lauper was a special guest at Nicki Minaj’s homecoming show in Brooklyn last night.
The two New Yorkers performed Minaj’s Pink Friday 2 track “Pink Friday Girls,” which samples Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” Minaj is a sworn superfan of Lauper, and after the rendition of “Pink Friday Girls,” Minaj was emotional. She bowed down to the singer while on center stage and told the audience, “I have been speaking about this woman in my interviews since I first began rapping.” She continued, saying “I never in a million years thought I’d be back rapping in New York with Cyndi Lauper.”
She then told the audience that she remembers “crying” to Lauper’s “True Colors,” which Lauper then sang a snippet of with Minaj. They hugged, and Minaj told the crowd with reverence, “God bless her. Don’t wait until we’re not here to give ourselves flowers. God bless this woman.” Watch clips of Minaj’s performance with Lauper below, as well as Minaj’s heartfelt dedication to the singer.
