From the time ancient humans first suspended taut strings over a bowl, we’ve been stumbling towards the guitar. 17th century Europe got pretty close with five courses of strings and a lap-sized body, and over the next hundred years the Spanish reached perfection with six strings and more space for resonation. After plugging-in in 1950, humanity held an instrument ready to conquer the (rapidly-globalizing) airwaves.
Consequence has been conquered, too. Welcome to Guitar Week, our six-stringed celebration of the world’s most popular instrument. We’re diving into the innovators, the legends, and the riffs we can’t get out of our heads, with contributions from a number of professional guitarists.
Guitar Week builds on the contributions of incredible bassists and drummers with Bass Week and Drum Week. As we did with the Best Bassists and Best Drummers, we’re launching Guitar Week with our list of the 100 Best Guitarists of All Time. We relied on the input and rankings of over 100 surveyed guitarists to compile our list, and you can read some of their thoughts in the final product.
Stay tuned throughout the week for a ranking of modern riffs and gear reviews, as well as exclusive interviews with Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, Dinosaur Jr.’s J. Mascis, Snail Mail, and more. Later on we’ll share our full survey results from over 100 guitarists. So whether you’re a seasoned shredder, a bedroom strummer, or just someone with your own good taste, plug in, turn up, and let it rip with Guitar Week.
