Let’s put on another Mixtapes!, our video interview series where artists reveal their musical tastes by creating a completely off-the-cuff playlist. This time, Larkin Poe’s song choices soundtrack messages for their distant relative Edgar Allan Poe, Freaky Friday body swaps, and psychics.
Siblings often share a brain, so we wanted to see if they share a musical mind as well by asking Larkin Poe’s Rebecca and Megan Lovell to join us for a game of Mixtapes! And as you can tell by their harmonies when they sing along to their choices, the sisters certainly seem in sync.
Sitting down at this year’s Topeka’s Moon Crush Pink Moon festival, Larkin Poe’s song selection is triggered by the usual silly prompts — but reveal some bigger stories. For example, thinking of the perfect track to celebrate shorts weather, the sisters land on Cake’s “Short Skirt/Long Jacket” — which Larkin Poe covered way back in 2017 on their YouTube channel. Then there’s The Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun” as they get over a sickness — which leads Rebecca telling the story of how she once gripped Paul McCartney’s arm maybe a bit too tight.
Perhaps most interesting is the song Larkin Poe wants to send their distant relative, the great poet Edgar Allan Poe. They ultimately land on their own track “Mad as a Hatter,” which was written about their own family’s relationship with mental illness. The band get their name from the real Larkin Poe, who was Edgar Allan Poe’s cousin, adding additional weight to sending “Mad as a Hatter” through history — via raven currier, of course.
