James Hetfield Sings "Enter Sandman" After Inhaling Helium

James Hetfield just turned 61 on Saturday (August 3rd), and he celebrated his birthday by treating fans to a unique rendition of the Metallica classic “Enter Sandman.”

A beaming Hetfield took to Metallica’s Instagram account to share a birthday message to fans, but not before inhaling helium gas from a balloon. For someone known for his gruff vocals, it’s hilarious and jarring to hear the pipsqueak voice come out of Hetfield as he sings “Happy Birthday” to himself.

“Hi, everybody. I’m 61. Did you know that?” he said before busting into laughter.

Then he starts singing “Enter Sandman,” pushing the hilarious bit over the top.

Hetfield looks to be doing well and in good spirits as Metallica continue to push on with their two-year “M72 World Tour.” The singer-guitarist entered rehab in 2019 for his ongoing battle with addiction, but he’s been a consistent source of positivity during the album cycle for 72 Seasons, from hosting unboxing videos, to cheering on younger bands — not to mention his stellar vocal performances on the album itself.

Metallica just kicked off the final North American leg of the “M72” tour with a pair of “No Repeat Weekend” shows in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Like previous shows on the trek, the double bill featured a different support lineup and setlist each night. Next up is a two-night stand at Soldier Field in Chicago with support from Pantera and Mammoth WVH on Friday night (August 9th) and Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills on Sunday night (August 11th).
