Billy Joel Says Brain Disorder Sounds Worse Than He's Feeling

Since Billy Joel revealed his diagnosis with the brain disorder Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) in May, only third parties have given updates about his condition. Now, the Piano Man himself has opened up about his current health.

“I feel fine. My balance sucks,” Joel said on the most recent episode of Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast. “It’s like being a boat… It used to be called ‘water on the brain.’ Now, it’s called Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.”

Continuing, Joel said doctors are unsure of the cause of his condition. “They don’t really know… I thought it must be from drinking,” he said. “I feel good. They keep referring to what I have as a brain disorder, so it sounds a lot worse than what I’m feeling.”

In a separate interview with PEOPLE, Joel offered a similar update. “I know a lot of people are worried about me and my health, but I’m okay,” he said. “What I have is something very few people know about, including me, no matter how much you try to research it. I’m doing my best to work with it and to recover from it.”

“It was like being on a boat all the time,” he added. “It was scary, but I’m okay. I just wanted to let people know, don’t worry about me being deathly ill or anything.”

Before these interviews, Howard Stern relayed an update about Joel’s condition on his SiriusXM radio program in early June, saying the artist wanted fans to know: “I’m not dying.” More recently, one of the directors of the Billy Joel documentary, And So It Goes, said Joel was “healing” from NPH by doing physical therapy.

The first part of Billy Joel: And So It Goes premiered on HBO Max this past Friday, with Part 2 coming to the streamer on Friday, July 25th.
