Youth Lagoon, the project of Idaho musician Trevor Powers, is back to announce a new album titled, Rarely Do I Dream, arriving on February 21st via Fat Possum. He’s also announced a 2025 North American tour, and shared the album’s latest new song, “Speed Freak.”
Rarely Do I Dream follows Youth Lagoon’s 2023 comeback LP Heaven Is a Junkyard, which served as Powers’ first album under the Youth Lagoon moniker in eight years. The new project was inspired by a collection of home videos from childhood that Powers revisited, and he employed samples of the tapes throughout the album.
“What I was really consumed with was how much I could zoom in on my actual history,” Powers wrote in a statement. “I wanted to really make someone feel like they were inside my living room in 1993, but rearrange the furniture a bit… The more I rewind the tapes of my life, the more I can hear the voice of my soul. This isn’t nostalgia. Life’s much more messy than that. It’s a dedication to all the parts of who I was, who I am, and who I’m going to be.”
In support of Rarely Do I Dream, Youth Lagoon will embark on a lengthy North American tour this spring. The run begins with a show in Spokane, Washington on March 27th, and continues dates in Portland, Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, Nashville, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, Montreal, Toronto, Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Denver, and more. Tickets for Youth Lagoon’s 2025 tour will go on-sale on Friday, January 10th at 10:00 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster.
“Speed Freak” is the latest offering from Rarely Do I Dream, following prior singles “Football,” “Lucy Takes a Picture,” and “My Beautiful Girl.” Atop quick drums and buzzing synths, Powers channels the moody electronica of the ’90s, building a soundscape off a breakbeat and a syncopated bass line. He peppers in a few home video samples, but for the most part, “Speed Freak” is all languid, contemplative vocals and restless instrumentals. Watch the track’s music video below.
