On Oct. 19, The Smashing Pumpkins brought their Sprits On Fire Tour to Madison Square Garden in New York with very special guests, Jane’s Addiction. The two ’90s powerhouses performed fan favorites and era icons from their respective discographies, with Jane’s Addiction opening with “Up The Beach” and “Whores” before collaborations with Daniel Ash on “Jane Says,” Josh Klinghoffer on “Three Days” and more.
The Smashing Pumpkins opened with “Empires,” and their set included highlights of “Stand Inside Your Love,” “Ava Adore,” “Cherub Rock,” a cover of the Talking Head’s “Once in a Lifetime,” an acoustic “Tonight, Tonight” and a set closing “Harmageddon.”

It’s notable that following their performance at Madison Square Garden, Jane’s Addiction were forced to cancel their Oct. 21 show at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Citing a “personal injury” suffered by lead singer Perry Farrell, the band sat the show out while Smashing Pumpkins took the stage solo.
On Monday, Farrell updated fans on the status of the band. “The tour so far has been an absolute blast,” Farrell stated. He continued: “I’ve loved seeing all your faces, hearing you sing with us and feeling the love and energy from each and every one of you.”
He went on to discuss his injury, announcing the cancellation of a handful of upcoming dates. “After Madison Square Garden on Wednesday [October 19th], I suffered an injury that resulted in my inability to perform. I have been in pain and discomfort and have been receiving rigorous physio therapy that has done wonders.” With that, Farrell noted the cancellation of the following upcoming shows: Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Toronto, Montreal, and Quebec City. For the missed Canada dates, Our Lady Peace will fill in for the band.
