Long before Jurassic Park, Gen-X kids got their dinosaur fix with the Saturday morning live-action series Land of the Lost. The series, which ran three seasons from 1974 to 1976, and had an incredibly catchy theme song. A theme still living rent-free in the minds of a generation. The series about a father and his two kids who went through a portal and became trapped in a secret world, one populated by dinosaurs and many other bizarre creatures, like the lizard-like Sleestak. Now, Netflix and Legendary Television plan to revive Land of the Lost for a new generation, according to Deadline. There is no showrunner or writer attached yet.
The original Land of the Lost series was one of many shows produced by the iconic TV-producing siblings Sid and Marty Krofft. Among their other Saturday Morning live-action shows of the early ’70s were H.R. Pufnstuf, Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, Lidsville, and many others. But Land of the Lost became their breakout hit in many ways. It ran in syndication for years after the final episode aired. The show got a revival in the early 90s, and then, a live-action spoof film starring Will Ferrell in 2008. None of the latter two were big hits, especially in comparison to the original. But the concept is still full of potential.

This will be the second show featuring dinosaurs from Legendary Television, as they produce the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Krofft brothers originally produced Land of the Lost long before CGI was a thing. So all the dinosaurs, like the T-rex “Grumpy,” came to life via stop motion. With today’s technology, Grumpy and all the other dinos can be truly terrifying. And we’d love to see if the Sleestacks with the extremely creepy sounds they make will traumatize a new generation of kids like it did for many of us olds.
