Author Nadine Condon joins Kyle Meredith to talk about her book Confessions: Stories to Rock Your Soul, a memoir of her time as a publicist for Jefferson Starship. Listen to the new episode above, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Condon’s book takes readers through her adventures and misadventures in the music industry, from the post-hippie era of the late ’70s to the decadent ’80s to the new discoveries of the ’90s. She recalls how she got her first job with Jefferson Starship on the day they released “Jane,” eventually staying with the group long enough to see them transition into Starship. She talks about feeling protective of the band’s Grace Slick and the general disregard for women artists, as well as why she ultimately made the decision to walk away from the music industry forever.
Outside of Jefferson Starship, Condon discusses helping launch the early careers of Beyoncé, Counting Crows, and several other bands with the showcases she would put on. “That was an R&B show I did in San Francisco, and the owner of the record plant at the time was producing a demo of these six girls from Houston, and they were called Girls Tyme,” she remembers of Beyoncé in particular. “People liked them, but the problem was they didn’t have management; each parental unit managed their daughter, and so no record company wanted to deal with five sets of parents.
“[Then] it all started to happen when Beyoncé and another one of the girls became Destiny’s Child,” she continues. “I just have always had a good nose for excitement and what’s next.”
