Disney+ and Hulu Are Getting Rid of These Shows and Movies for Good

You or your family may have a favorite show or movie on Disney+ or Hulu, but there’s no guarantee that it’s going to be available on either of those services forever. In fact, some are getting the boot in a week. On May 18, it was revealed that the streaming services—which are both owned by The Walt Disney Company—will be getting rid of dozens of shows, movies, and specials on Friday, May 26. These are Disney+ or Hulu original shows and movies, which is why the move may come as a surprise to subscribers. Streaming services often rotate content from outside production companies and distributors, but Hulu and Disney+ cutting these shows means that they will no longer be available to watch anywhere for the time being.

As reported by Deadline, the shows and films leaving are also mostly short-lived series and direct-to-streaming movies and include competition shows, comedies, remakes, and more. Read on to find out more about the decision, and to see which TV series and movies are getting the axe.

Disney+ and Hulu are cutting these shows and movies in order to save money. According to Variety, Disney CFO Christine McCarthy said during a recent earnings call that the company expects to take a write-down of $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion by removing the content. According to the publication, “By writing down the value of the content assets, Disney can remove that from its balance sheet and reduce its tax bill.”

“We are in the process of reviewing the content on our [direct-to-consumer] services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation,” McCarthy reportedly said on the call. “As a result, we will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms.”

It’s possible that the shows and films that are removed from Hulu and Disney+ could resurface on another service. In an article about streaming services clearing out content published prior to the Disney+ and Hulu news, Deadline explained that content deleted from other streaming services was later sent to ad-supported services, such as The Roku Channel and Tubi. As an example, Deadline points to the plan for the HBO show Westworld to soon stream on The Roku Channel after being removed from HBO Max.
