So, no one told you life was gonna be this way. We bet you can hear the song we’re putting down. Of course, it’s “I’ll Be There for You” by The Rembrandts, also known as the Friends theme song, also known as one of the most popular theme songs in history. For many folks out there, hearing those opening notes serves as an instant mood-lifter, a truly positive association with a formative show they love. However, one Friends cast member has a very different experience. David Schwimmer, who played Ross Geller on Friends, actually has an aversion to the theme song. He reveals hearing the song gives him a really bad reaction. Schwimmer’s reflexive ick to the Friends theme song isn’t necessarily about his time on the show, but more about hearing the theme so many times. We guess that makes sense.

On Matt Lucas and David Walliams’ Making a Scene podcast, David Schwimmer revealed he never wants to listen to the Friends theme song again. He shares, “’ll be really honest, there was a time for quite a while that just hearing the theme song would really… ” He trails off, trying to explain just how badly the song would make him feel. “I just had that reaction. I mean, I just had heard it so many times.”

Friends ran for 10 seasons, that’s quite a vast time period haunted by a song. And even after the series ended, Schwimmer reveals the Friends theme song still followed him everywhere. “Any time you’d go on a show or a talk show or an interview, that would be your intro song.” He shares, “So I just didn’t have the greatest response to it for a period of time.”

Schwimmer added, though, that his daughter discovered the show when she was around nine, and that changed things a little. “I’d be making breakfast or whatever, and I’d hear my kid’s laughter. My whole relationship to that song and to the show changed again.”

Still, we bet Schwimmer feels the Friends theme song is just a little bit too there for him. And we hope for his sake that he never has to hear it again.
