Daphne and Celeste landed in the pop charts with their catchy songs Ooh Stick You and U.G.L.Y at the turn of the Millennium.

However, they are also remembered for a disastrous appearance at Reading Festival in the UK.

Festival-goers did not respond well to Daphne and Celeste being added to the lineup and the teenagers found themselves being pelted with bottles of urine and toilet paper when they took to the stage.

Even a wheelchair was chucked at them.

Now in their 40s, Celeste Cruz and Karen ‘Daphne’ DiConcetto have looked back on their horrible career low.

The singers, who are from New Jersey, shared a clip of themselves sat in the kitchen with a caption that reads, “‘You’re so funny’.

“Thanks. When we were teenagers 25,000 adults threw bottles at us because we wanted to sing them some songs.”

They also shared a recap of the shocking incident in response to one fan who had asked for “context”.

It showed the girls wearing T-shirts emblazoned with ‘Who the f*** is Eminem‘ and the baying Reading crowd holding up a large banner that said “b***cks”.

Another clip showed Daphne and Celeste standing on stage holding microphones as bottles were thrown at them.

A voiceover said, “When they stepped on stage, all hell broke loose.

“Empty bottles, bottles of urine and other objects. Even a wheelchair was thrown at them during their set.

“The Reading Festival are no strangers to bottling acts they don’t approve of, like 50 Cent, but this is said to be the most hostile reaction in the festival’s history.”

In the throwback footage, Daphne even pointed to a sign in the crowd and said, “I love the signs. Die… Yes I will.”

Commenting on the video, music fans shared their memories of the incident.

One said, “Thing is, I barely remember any of the acts, but I certainly remember you! oh and Placebo sucked. I got so bored I went to bed early lol.”

Another added, “Genuinely the most punk rock moment Reading festival has ever seen.”

And a third wrote told them, “Dang that crowd was vicious. I would’ve loved to see Daphne & Celeste live. Like I still play UGLY and Ooh Stick You occasionally.”

Daphne and Celeste shot to fame in 2000 thanks to their chipmunk-style voices and punchy lyrics.

Their career peaked with their Reading Festival performance – where they were put on the line-up alongside the likes of Placebo, Stereophonics and Slipknot.

Karen later told The Guardian: “Backstage, Slipknot and Rage Against the Machine were coming up to us and telling us how hardcore we were – how they wouldn’t have stayed out there.

“It was definitely the best thing we did, our crowning achievement.”

But their fame was short and sweet, and Daphne and Celeste were dropped by their record label just a year later after poor sales of their album.

The duo’s last effort at music was their 2018 single, You And I Alone, but it didn’t chart.

However, they already have 27,000 likes on TikTok after setting up an account with a bio that reads, “Daphne and Celeste. Your new best friends!”
