Duran Duran new music

In October 2023, Duran Duran released their 16th studio album “Danse Macabre.”

The record is a bit of a departure for the New Wave group; this time around, the band embraces a creepier, spookier sound than they have on previous records. Foreboding horns lead us into the haunting opening track “NIGHTBOAT,” ominous percussion kicks in and we’re off.

“BLACK MOONLIGHT,” one of the album’s two singles is a bit more in step with Duran Duran’s brand of arena rock. Dancey with a bit of an edge and a hooky chorus “Hold tight/we’re going out tonight/under the black moonlight.”

Standout tracks to keep an eye on include the longing “LOVE VOUDOU,” propulsive, bass-heavy “BURY A FRIEND” and the hypnotic title track “DANSE MACABRE.”

Still, for our money, the song you’ll be humming all night long — make no mistake, this is a nighttime album — is their sped-up, shiny cover of The Specials’ “GHOST TOWN.”

Don’t sleep on their glossy re-imaginings of the Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black,” Rick James’ “Super Freak” (they’ve updated it to “Super Lonely Freak”) and The Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer.”

Basically, “DANSE MACABRE” is your dream Tim Burton soundtrack.

If you’d like to give it a try, you can listen to the angsty album here.
