Despite the fact that it’s a historically long-running and beloved comedy series, the cast of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia had never presented at the Emmy Awards, let alone be nominated for one. Until Monday night.
Appearing together on stage for the first time at the Emmys, the cast of It’s Always Sunny — Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, Charlie Day, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito — cracked some jokes about the fact that they’ve never been invited to the ceremony.
“The show has been on since 2005 and I’ve never even been here!” Howerton said.
“Have you guys been doing this every year without us?” Day asked upon ‘finding out’ this year’s Emmy Awards were the 75th edition. “I feel like we’re getting the full Marvel treatment here.”
The crew then discussed the fact that DeVito has an Emmy under his belt for his work on Taxi, which racked up 34 nominations during its five years on the air in the late 70s and early 80s.
“34 nominations in five years vs. zero nominations in 16 years? That math is bad!” Olson noted.
Ironically enough, Rob McElhenney did actually win some Emmy awards on Monday night but they had nothing to do with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and were instead for his FX docuseries Welcome to Wrexham.
The five Emmys that Welcome to Wrexham won were for Outstanding Cinematography For A Reality Program, Outstanding Picture Editing For An Unstructured Reality Program, Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program, Outstanding Directing For A Reality Program, and Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Reality Program (Single or Multi-Camera).
The 16th season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia premiered in June of last year. Since its 15th season, the series became the longest-running live-action sitcom in the history of American television.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been renewed to run for another two seasons, which will bring its total to 18.
