In the final days leading up to the 2024 US presidential election, Stevie Nicks has opened up about the importance of voting.
In a new interview with MSNBC, the Fleetwood Mac member said that she didn’t begin voting until recently, a story she has told onstage “for the last two years.” Speaking with Mika Brzezinski, she urged people not to follow in her footsteps, saying, “Vote. No matter what. I never voted until I was 70, and I regret that…and I don’t have very many regrets.”
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member recalled being surrounded by artists putting out protest songs in the ’60s and ’70s, mentioning Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, and emphasizing that her recent release, “The Lighthouse,” is her modern-day take on music of that nature.
“If you are going to vote in one election, let it be this one,” Nicks continued. “No matter who wins — God help us — no matter who wins, it’s not over, right? We have to figure out a way to bring back Roe v. Wade.”
Calling music a “bridge” between political ideologies, Nicks also talked down the excuses people often conjure for not heading to the polls. “You could say I didn’t have time — in the long run, you didn’t have an hour you could have gone and voted?”
In September, following Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Kamala Harris, Nicks co-signed the statement via Instagram, writing, “As my friend Taylor Swift so eloquently stated, now is the time to research and choose the candidate that speaks to you and your beliefs.”
