On Tuesday, Sept. 11, Thee Sacred Souls offered up “Waiting on the Right Time,” the third preview single from the band’s highly anticipated sophomore studio album. Set to release on Oct. 4 via Daptone Records, Got a Story to Tell follows up on the retro soul trio’s earth-shaking 2022 debut with another meticulous and masterful recreation of lost sounds, now found. The group’s latest dispatch shares a new shade of its intricate wax synthesis, embracing the sunny haze of ‘60s West Coast psychedelia for a story of romantic hesitation.

“Waiting on the Right Time” arrives as a perfect summer sendoff, casting a magic hour glow from its meticulous studio shine. Bright beams of guitar fuzz glide over a simmering blacktop backbeat from Sal Samano and Alex Garcia, whose slinking baseline and heavy, muffled kicks add a restrained insistence to the emotionally nuanced arrangement. Josh Lane delivers a hypnotic vocal performance that vividly recalls Impressions-era Curtis Mayfield, effortlessly coasting up to heady falsetto peaks as he seeks the moment to let love be known. Through the crackle and warmth of nostalgic hi-fi, the track offers a soul-stirring vision of the past and a testament to Thee Sacred Souls’ gift for expressing universal moods.

This third sample follows the mesmerizing Windy City soul charmer “Lucid Girl” and “Live for You,” which could be taken for a What’s Going On outtake with its streetbeating shuffle and conga prowl. All 12-tracks of Got a Story to Tell were set to tape at Riverside, Calif.’s Penrose Recorders, Daptone co-founder Bosco Mann’s analog haven and the beating heart of the SoCal souldies scene; the band’s diligent throwback recreation–from its instruments to its songwriting fact-meets-fiction songwriting style–exudes a deep veneration for its sonic forebearers.

To support its forthcoming record, Thee Sacred Souls have also announced a new string of dates on its Live For You Tour, which kicked off on Sept. 7 and will now run through Mar. 6. After completing its current European tour, the band will return to the States on Sept. 28 for a set at Bridgeport, Conn.’s Soundside Music Festival. From here, the group will march across the East Coast, Gulf Coast, Midwest and West Coast, plotting a total of 35 appearances at high-profile venues like Nashville, Tenn.’s Ryman Auditorium, Chicago’s Salt Shed, Brooklyn, N.Y.’s Brooklyn Paramount, Los Angeles’ Wiltern and San Francisco’s Masonic Theater before a Jan. 31 tour closer at Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas. After this sprint, the group will return to Europe for 13 more dates through Mar. 6. For tickets and more information, visit theesacredsouls.com/tour-dates.
