Marvel has decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day by revealing the official cast for The Fantastic Four: Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, and Stranger Things 4 breakout Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch. The studio also announced a new July 25th, 2025 release date for the film.
The new film, officially titled The Fantastic Four, will be Marvel Studio’s first crack at their famed First Family after regaining the character rights in Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox. In the comics, Richards embarks on a scientific space mission with his girlfriend, Sue; her brother, Johnny; and his best friend/pilot, Ben. When the mission goes awry, they’re bombarded with cosmic rays, granting them each unique abilities: Richards’ body is able to stretch and transform, Sue can turn invisible and create invisible forcefields, Johnny can become a living flame and fly, and Ben turns into a super-strong rock monster — but unlike his friends, he’s unable to change back and forth at will.
Pascal’s casting was first reported back in November, and each of the other actors have been rumored for their respective characters for months. The Last of Us actor takes over the iconic Marvel role from John Krasinski, who cameoed as an alternative reality version of Mr. Fantastic in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Ioan Gruffudd played the part in Fox’s two Fantastic Four movies in the ’00s, with Miles Teller taking the role in the 2015 Josh Trank reboot. Invisible Woman was previously played by Jessica Alba and Kate Mara, The Thing by Michael Chiklis and Jamie Bell, and Human Torch by Chris Evans and Michael B. Jordan in those earlier adaptations.
As the promo art used to announce the new cast (see below) implies, the Fantastic Four’s classic robot companion H.E.R.B.I.E. also looks to appear in the movie. The image also teases a ’60s midcentury modern vibe, which fits with the fact that the movie is being helmed by acclaimed WandaVision director Matt Shakman. (Jon Watts, director of the Tom Holland Spider-Man trilogy, was previously attached.) Josh Friedman, Jeff Kaplan, and Ian Springer wrote the script.
The Fantastic Four’s new July 25th release was previously held by Marvel’s The Thunderbolts, a supervillain team-up starring Florence Pugh (Black Widow), Harrison Ford (General Ross), Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster), Wyatt Russell (US Agent), and Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost), and David Harbour (Red Guardian). That movie has been moved up to May 2nd, 2025, despite recent major recasting including Lewis Pullman replacing Steven Yeun as the rumored antagonist The Sentry, and Geraldine Viswanathan stepping in for Ayo Edebiri in an undisclosed role.
