Alice Costelloe has released the title track of her upcoming EP When It’s The Time, marking her first release under her full name since signing with Moshi Moshi Records.
New single ‘When It’s The Time’ is a captivating blend of art-pop and indie sounds, balancing optimism with a darker exploration of mortality. The track is a sonic progression for Costelloe, with a lush mix of pillowy synths and celestial organs supporting her soothing vocals. Thematically, the song delves into deeper reflections on life and its end, inspired by romantic relationships and larger existential questions.
Discussing the inspiration behind the song, Costelloe says:
“I live right by an intense religious organisation, I don’t want to say which one in case they damn me to hell even more, but they often knock on the door with leaflets about saving your soul because the end times are coming. I had started writing ‘When It’s The Time’ about moving on from a romantic relationship but the preachers that kept knocking at the door took the song in a different direction as I started to think about the end of things in general, beyond relationships, to the end of life, the end of the world, and this became a sort of theme of the EP.”
With its combination of 60s nostalgia and modern electronic elements, ‘When It’s The Time’ serves as the benchmark for the rest of the EP, showcasing a new artistic direction for Alice Costelloe.
