After The Hollywood Reporter reported an upcoming Freaky Friday sequel in May of last year, the 2003 film’s original star Lindsay Lohan has now confirmed the project is in the works.
Speaking to Andy Cohen on his SiriusXM show, Lohan verified that the long-awaited sequel for Freaky Friday is in the works, with co-star Jamie Lee Curtis set to return as well. “Lindsay, there are rumors that a Freaky Friday sequel with you and Jamie Lee Curtis could be in the works,” Cohen asked. “Is there anything you can tell us about that?”
“It is,” Lohan confirmed. Cohen then asked about a potential timeline for the sequel, but Lohan couldn’t give anything away. “I won’t say that yet, I don’t want to say too much! We’re both excited — I’m going to speak for Jamie,” Lohan told Cohen.
Both Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis have expressed recent interest in reviving their iconic body-switching film 20 years later. In a 2023 New York Times anniversary piece on the film with the two stars, Jamie Lee Curtis claimed she “called [her] friends at Disney and said, ‘It feels like there’s a movie to be made.’” Lohan also seemed excited about the possibility of a sequel, telling the New York Times “Jamie and I are both open to that, so we’re leaving it in the hands that be. We would only make something that people would absolutely adore.”
Freaky Friday isn’t the only piece of Lindsay Lohan-starring early 2000s nostalgia getting a reboot — she recently appeared in a cameo for the musical remake of Mean Girls, which came out in January. Meanwhile, Lohan has returned to film acting, appearing in the 2022 holiday film Falling For Christmas as well as the upcoming Netflix rom-com, Irish Wish.
