Katy Perry returned safely to earth on Monday morning after she, Gale King, Alisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen, Kerianne Flynn and Lauren Sanchez spent approximately 11 minutes on a round-trip flight beyond the internationally recognized boundary of space. She and King both kissed the ground.
It felt like a little bit of an over-dramatization but who I am I to say. I’ve never been to space.
The star-studded, all-female flight crew flew approximately 62 miles above the Blue Origin launch site in Van Horn, Texas. That distance extends just beyond the Kármán line, which qualifies as outer space. They spent several minutes in zero gravity before returning back to the Lone Star State.

The launch took place at 9:30 a.m. EDT on Monday after weeks of anticipation. The flight lasted 10 minutes and 21 seconds from start to finish.
Although the group had asked Katy Perry to sing one of her smash hits while in space, like ‘Firework’ or Roar,’ she did not want to make it about her own music. The multi-platinum recording artist chose to sing a rendition of Louis Armstrong’s ‘What A Wonderful World’ instead.
I’ve covered that song in the past. Obviously my higher self is steering the ship. I had no clue I’d one day decide to sing a little bit of that in space. It’s not about me. It’s not about singing my songs. It’s about a collective energy and making space for future women. It’s about this wonderful world that we see right out there and appreciating it. This is all for the benefit of Earth.
— Katy Perry
No part of the journey is more stressful than initial descent. It is a total free fall until the parachutes open. At that moment, the remaining risk becomes fairly minimal. The crew could be heard celebrating the successful deployment of the parachutes before they eventually landed back on earth with a thud.

As soon as Perry and King got out of the capsule, they both dropped to their knees and kissed the ground below them. It was quite the scene.
I am not a Katy Perry hater and I am not here to discredit the feeling of a return to earth after spending time in outer space, no matter how brief. I actually love Katy Perry and I admittedly don’t know if I have the stomach to get in a rocket ship. It takes guts. Credit to them!
However, this trip came with a lot of hype. The media and Blue Origin made it seem like these six women were risking their lives to travel into the next galaxy.
While that might be true to some extent, it was not quite as exciting as advertised. It was underwhelming. Michael Strahan took this exact same trip for Good Morning America last year. It has been done before.
To then get out of the capsule and kiss the ground, knowing full well that the cameras are rolling, felt like a little bit much. Especially when Perry was actively trying not to make the trip about herself. I get it! Flying 62 miles above the earth is wild and dangerous! But come on…
