A reboot of the famed early 2000s stunt game show Fear Factor is in the works at Fox. According to reports, Jackass frontman Johnny Knoxville will be the host of the new iteration.
Fear Factor originally ran on NBC from 2001 to 2006 and was now-famously hosted by popular podcaster Joe Rogan. The series featured contestants of three men and three women who were pitted against each other in stunt competitions vying for a grand prize of $50,000.
The types of challenges in Fear Factor were usually The Challenge-type physical activities (except with a more stuntman edge to them) or gross-out eating challenges like eating bull testicles or being covered in tarantulas.
NBC attempted to revive the series in 2009, followed by MTV in 2017, who hosted a Ludacris-hosted version of the show for two years.
This latest iteration being set up at Fox is titled Fear Factor: The Next Chapter and will feature legendary stuntman and actor Johnny Knoxville as its host, a guy who knows a thing or two about overcoming fear.
“Johnny Knoxville is the champion of fearless entertainment. His wild sense of humor, unmatched ability to push boundaries and take on the extreme makes him the perfect fit to lead this bold new reinvention of Fear Factor,” said Fox President Michael Thorn in a statement.
“When you reimagine a series as legendary as Fear Factor, you need a host who is the epitome of daring charisma and spectacle, and that’s Johnny Knoxville personified. We’ll be pushing fear and social strategy to places that will redefine reality competition, which makes Johnny the perfect host for what will be a wild, unforgettable ride, and we’re beyond excited to see him unleash all the fear and the fun on our contestants and our viewers.”
Knoxville, the biggest breakout from the Jackass franchise, has also been a successful actor over the last two decades, appearing in films such as Men In Black II, The Dukes of Hazzard, The Ringer, The Last Stand, and Bad Grandpa (a Jackass spinoff), and series such as Reboot, The Orville, History of the World, Part II, and The Studio.
