Jimmy Fallon’s tenure as the host of The Tonight Show has seen the formerly amiable Saturday Night Live cast member turn into a shallow, seemingly manufactured comedian that’s become best known for his over-exaggerated fake laugh.
Unfortunately for Jimmy Fallon, his brand of comedy on The Tonight Show — the aforementioned absurd giggling into addition to his childish game-playing with his guests — has made him largely unpopular in recent years, which is something that the 50-year-old recently admitted is the “absolute worst.”
According to Fallon, he wants “everyone” to like him, which has perhaps resulted in the exact sort of patronizing persona that has made the public opinion of him sway in the other direction.
“I want everyone to like me. I can’t stand [the hate]. I go, ‘Oh, my gosh. What can I do to make you like me?’ I think the answer is you can’t. You can’t make everyone like you. You just have to do what you do. And do the best that you can at what you do. And be happy with yourself,” Fallon said on the The Diary of a CEO podcast.
“Some people want you to fail. People’s jobs are to take me down and to put bad press out and stuff. That’s their job, and you’re just like, ‘Ooh.’ I don’t live in that world. I don’t believe that it’s real, but it kind of is real and you go, ‘Oh, people are just kind of being mean.’”
Fallon has been the host of The Tonight Show, succeeding Jay Leno, since 2014 and currently has a contract with NBC that runs through 2028. In addition to featuring on Saturday Night Live and hosting The Tonight Show, Fallon had a brief acting stint in the early 2000s, appearing in the comedy Taxi alongside Queen Latifah and the rom-com Fever Pitch opposite Drew Barrymore.
