Jack Antonoff, accomplished producer and songwriter, chats with Kyle Meredith about the new self-titled album from Bleachers, how fun. fits into the trajectory of his career, and working with artists like Lana Del Rey.
Antonoff discusses how the roots of Bleachers’ come from his 2000s group Steel Train, why the original title for the new record was Tribute Living, and how he sees each album as a movie. He also shares his thoughts on if society is heading towards a new kind of monoculture, the heartbreaking moments from his past that still share a narration in his current songs, and producing Lana Del Rey’s “perfect voice.”
“It’s a perfect voice. It’s smooth and it’s comforting and it’s scary — it’s everything,” he explains of LDR’s vocals. “There’s only two people, in my opinion, that have ever had that [kind of] voice — and they don’t sound similar, but it’s her and Roy Orbison.”
