Born on June 4, 1941, in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina, Linda Martell is a country singer who is popularly known for being the first commercially successful black female country musician.
Linda helped pave the way for future Nashville minority artists by using her influence as one of the first African-American country musicians.
Growing up in South Carolina she formed a singing group with her family called Linda Martell and the Anglos.

As a result, she began performing as a solo act and was signed by producer Shelby Singleton to his Nashville label in 1969.
Her stellar work ethic enabled the label to release her country cover of Color Him Father the same year she was signed by Shely’s label.
Linda’s song became a top 10 single on the Billboard charts. She released her debut album in 1970.
At the peak of her career, Linda made several appearances on country music television programs. During this period, she released two singles and later made her first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry.
In 1974, Linda retired from country music after leaving her recording contract and parting ways with her manager Duke Raymer.
She later pursued a career in public education. However, she also retired from her public school career in the mid-2000s.
