Jessica Chastain would like to clear the air.
The 45-year-old actress took to social media to react to a report that she was “personally offended by the lyrics to Tammy Wynette‘s song “Stand By Your Man,” which she performed in the new biopic series George & Tammy.
The Daily Mail was behind the report, which quoted an interview Jessica gave to The Guardian.

“FYI,” she wrote on Twitter. “I have never said that I was personally offended by the lyrics of Stand By Your Man. Any article stating otherwise is just trying to get clicks.”
“I’ve said multiple times that the song is about standing by someone and forgiving them through difficulty. Doesn’t mean you need to stay married to them, proven by Tammy herself. I love the song. Grateful that I got to learn beyond the stereotype and see it the way Tammy did,” she added.
“So yeah, don’t believe the clickbait headlines. I would have just ignored them myself but I have too much respect for Tammy Wynette and her legacy to let it slide,” Jessica wrote in a third tweet before encouraging fans to check out the latest episode of George & Tammy.
In her interview with The Guardian, Jessica appeared to address the lyrics of a different song by Tammy – “Run, Woman, Run.”
“But even she had to admit that lyrics such as ‘Run, woman, run / Go back to him and fix things up the very best you can’ were a tough sell for a modern audience. They also offended her, personally,” the publication wrote.
Jessica revealed that she addressed the lyrics before filming a scene where she sang it.
“I looked out at all these sweet, young faces staring up at me and said, ‘Girls: I do not want you to listen to the lyrics of this song. Please. I love Tammy, but she did not believe this. She was married five times, so do not take any of this as gospel,’” she explained.
George & Tammy is airing on Showtime.
If you were curious, Jessica has previously spoken about singing “Stand By Your Man” for the series.
