Okay, honesty time: I had no idea the People’s Choice Awards were on last night until I saw our Canadian Lord and Saviour Shania Twain trend on Twitter.
Naturally, I held my breath (as you do anytime the name of a beloved celeb trends) until I realized that all the Tweets were some form of “slaaaaaay!” due to:
I mean, can we have some commotion for the dress (and cape) please.
If this looks familiar, it’s because Shania’s leopard red carpet ensemble paid homage to an incredibly iconic pop star… herself.
Something that *do* impress me much? A reference to the “That Don’t Impress Me Much” music video— one of the greatest pieces of visual media to ever grace our retinas.
And it totally made sense that Shania was wearing something that celebrated herself. After all, she was at the PCA’s to receive The People’s Music Icon Award.
In a super sweet speech Shania told the crowd, “I just want to say giddy up kids. Embrace your individuality and your crazy ideas. Just be brave. Let’s remember there is power in numbers. We are in this together. Love is love. And when a door slams in your face, just taking a freakin’ run—just run and leap at that door and kick it down. You won’t regret it.”
And while the performance included flames,
The true stand-out moment was when Shania swapped out Brad Pitt’s name for Ryan Reynold’s while singing “That Don’t Impress Me Much”.
I wasn’t the only one thrilled by what I can only describe as “The Canadian Crossover Event of the Century, Period”. Later Ryan posted his excitement on his Instagram Story:
It was a true “icon recognizing icon” moment. And I mean that literally. Ryan was at the PCA’s to receive the People’s Icon Award.
I know, I know… randomly a huuuuuge night for entertainers from The North. We’ll take it though! As a Canadian, I’ve always known these 2 are icons, but it’s nice to see them get a little statue for it anyway.
What did you think of Shania’s performance? Giddy up and let me know down below!
