Last night, prodigal duo DOMi & JD Beck showcased the ethereal contemporary jazz found on their debut LP, Not Tight, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, with the help of their friend and collaborator Mac DeMarco.
During the performance, DOMi, a french keyboardist, and JD Beck, a drummer from Texas, played their song “TWO SHRiMPS.” DeMarco handled vocals during the musical segment and was in familiar territory as he recorded the studio track with them through Anderson .Paak’s Blue Note imprint Apeshit–DOMi & JD Beck are the inaugural artists on the label. It’s notable the two are currently up for the Best New Artist Grammy, and the album featured artists like Thundercat, DeMarco, Snoop Dogg and Anderson .Paak himself.
For the clip, the two virtuosos were seated in the background of a well-kept garden–with three pink petaled trees and manicured bushes–facing each other while expertly trading polyrhythms and complex synth arrangements. DeMarco, in his trademark playful style, swayed and sang in the foreground, smiling at the newfangled sound cascading over his shoulders. At the two-a-half-minute mark, DeMarco sat and let the two do their thing. It’s also of note that while DOMi utilized multiple keyboards, simultaneously laying out basslines with one hand and chords with the other, she sat on a porcelain throne.
Throughout the performance, The Tonight Show‘s live audience audibly cheered at DOMi & JD Beck’s skill and musicianship which elicited DeMarco’s adored gap-toothed grin on multiple occasions.
