Paleta is a big fan of ocean activities like snorkeling and swimming. “Research has shown that being near, in, on or under water can provide a long list of benefits for our mind and body, including lowering stress and anxiety, increasing an overall sense of well-being and happiness, a lower heart and breathing rate, and safe, better workouts, says marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols. “Aquatic therapists are increasingly looking to the water to help treat and manage PTSD, addiction, anxiety disorders, autism and more.”
As a busy mother of two, Paleta loves nothing better than relaxing in a bath. “Taking baths has great physical and mental health benefits,” says family medicine provider Amy Zack, MD. “Baths help many people sleep well,” notes Dr. Zack. “They also create a good environment for meditation, thought and escape from everyday stressors.”
Paleta enjoys kayaking in the ocean, something experts say has many health benefits. “The term ‘blue mind’ describes the mildly meditative state we fall into when near, in, on or under water,” says Nichols. “It’s the antidote to what we refer to as ‘red mind,’ which is the anxious, over-connected and over-stimulated state that defines the new normal of modern life. Research has proven that spending time near the water is essential to achieving an elevated and sustained happiness.”
Paleta takes collagen supplements as part of her wellness regimen. “Many people don’t realize that adding collagen to your diet can also help in reducing the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks,” says Amy Myers, MD. “When skin loses its elasticity and becomes thin, cellulite becomes more obvious. Collagen benefits your skin by increasing moisture retention, boosting elasticity, and helping to smooth out that dimpled appearance.”
Paleta enjoys a bowl of granola with fresh fruit for breakfast. “Research suggests eating a wide variety of plant foods – ideally 30 different foods a week – is key to promoting a diverse range of beneficial gut bacteria,” says registered nutritionist Nicola Shubrook. “Granola is made up of a number of ingredients including oats, nuts, seeds and dried fruit. These ingredients are rich in dietary fibre and plant compounds called polyphenols which studies indicate have beneficial effects on the diversity of our gut microbes.”
