López loves to work out with her husband Luis Antonio Jiménez and their three children. “Exercising as a family doesn’t just create physically and mentally healthy individuals, though that is a huge payoff,” says clinical psychologist Dr. Christina Hibbert. “It creates a healthier family unit. Being active together doesn’t just help wear kids out so they’ll go to bed earlier and sleep longer (which, let’s face it parents, is a bonus). Exercise has the potential to bring families closer.”
López loves adventurous activities such as paragliding, which can provide a huge adrenaline rush. “Stress is an essential part of life. It is perhaps the greatest source of growth and accomplishment,” says clinical psychologist Inna Khazan. “Adrenaline is part of a healthy response to life’s challenges.”
López enjoys swimming, especially with her children. “Swimming can improve mood in both men and women,” says the CDC. “For people with fibromyalgia, swimming can decrease anxiety, and exercise therapy in warm water can decrease depression and improve mood. Water-based exercise can improve the health of pregnant people and has a positive effect on the pregnant person’s mental health.”
López is an accomplished pole dancer, and loves incorporating the exercise into her workout regimen. “Pole is a fantastic core workout,” says pole athlete Joanna Pawelczyk. “You won’t ever have to do sit ups or crunches again, and with time, that six pack will be yours. As someone who did weights at the gym religiously four to five times a week before I started pole I can confidently say that no amount of gym gave me the same toned body that pole does.”
López loves nothing better than spending time with her family. “Good relationships keep us happier and healthier,” says psychiatrist Dr. Robert Waldinger, director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development. “Our study has shown that the people who fared the best were the people who leaned into relationships, with family, with friends, with community.”
