While “Mayfair Witches” won’t be out in time for this year’s Halloween festivities, it looks like it has a shot at becoming a future spooky-season classic. Alexandra Daddario takes the lead in AMC’s onscreen adaption of Anne Rice’s sprawling supernatural trilogy Lives of the Mayfair Witches, and the trailer, out on Oct. 6, is full of intrigue from start to finish.
“Mayfair Witches” stars Daddario as Rowan, a young neurosurgeon who finds out she comes from a family of witches, resulting in some formidable powers of her own. She is then forced to grapple with a spirit that has haunted her family — and occasionally worked in tandem with them — for generations.
The trailer’s release comes on the heels of another small-screen adaption of a Rice classic. In May 2020, Variety reported that AMC had acquired the rights to two of her beloved series, the Vampire Chronicles and Lives of the Mayfair Witches. The first adaption from her vampire books, “Interview With the Vampire,” was released on Oct. 2.
“It’s always been my dream to see the worlds of my two biggest series united under a single roof so that filmmakers could explore the expansive and interconnected universe of my vampires and witches,” Rice, who died in December 2021, said in 2020, per Variety. “That dream is now a reality, and the result is one of the most significant and thrilling deals of my long career.”

“Mayfair Witches” Cast
Fresh off her memorable performance in “The White Lotus,” Daddario stars as perceptive young surgeon Dr. Rowan Fielding. Meanwhile, Jack Huston plays the spirit Lasher, while Tongayi Chirisa plays Ciprien Grieve and Harry Hamlin plays family patriarch Cortland Mayfair.
“Mayfair Witches” Plot
“Mayfair Witches” will follow Daddario’s Rowan as she deals with the fact that she comes from a family of New Orleans witches who work with a powerful spirit called Lasher. It will also deal with the subversive side of witches and the lore that surrounds them. “The world of witches has fascinated and terrified for centuries,” showrunners Esta Spalding and Michelle Ashford said in an AMC press release. “And yet Anne Rice’s particular lens on witches explored something new altogether. Women who are powerful, often brutal, and always committed to subverting our current power structures.”
“Mayfair Witches” Release Date
