Phish fans chase songs, sure, but let’s be honest with ourselves here: We really chase jams. That’s reason #1 for following our four favorite dudes from Vermont around the country, hitting show after show with our friends.

Some Phish jams are deeply steeped in lore – especially when it comes to the festival sets. The so-called “secret set” – usually late night on Saturday or the wee hours of the morning on Sunday – has been a hallmark of pretty much every Phish festival over the years. This Phish tradition features the band doing what it does best: Keeping their fans on their toes in theatrical fashion, then launching into ambient, mind-bending improvisational soundscapes made up completely on the spot.

It’s music that’s a journey, transcending the boundaries of our collective consciousness and spectral reality.

  • The Ambient Jam (Lemonwheel, 1998)
  • The Tower Jam (IT, 2003)
  • The Drive-In Jam (Magnaball, 2015)
  • The Storage Jam (SuperBall IX, 2011)
  • The Flatbed Truck Jam (Clifford Ball, 1996)
  • The Disco Set (The Great Went, 1997)

If you know your Phish, you know that fan-recorded audience-recorded versions of these musical moments circulated amongst tape and disc traders over the years. The Tower Jam from IT was recorded for a DVD release of the festival.

Lucky for us, Phish is releasing a high-quality verison famous Flatbed Jam from 1996’s Clifford Ball.

The recording of the Flatbed Truck Jam, from August 16, 1996, will be available to stream for subscribers on LivePhish.com starting on Friday, March 4th.

If you’re not familiar with LivePhish, it’s Phish’s direct-to-consumer portal for listening to every live show since 2003 – and then some. For a limited time, you can sign up for a one-year subscription for only $75.

In the meantime, you can catch a broadcast full jam tonight on SiriusXM’s Phish Radio Channel 29. The airing starts at Midnight ET, featuring an intro from the band’s archivist, Kevin Shapiro.
