It may be early in the game, but evidence abounds: The romantic ribbon is slated to be 2022’s standout hair accessory. We began the week with Selena Gomez’s bowed bun and Hoyeon Jung’s beribboned braid at Sunday’s SAG Awards, and now those looks have been joined by Anya Taylor-Joy’s ribbon headband, donned for a front-row viewing of Dior’s fall 2022 show in Paris.
To complement the actor’s pin-straight peroxide blonde, hairstylist Gregory Russell layered her deep side part with a black ribbon, the thick strip affording the moment an additional dose of subtle glamour. Makeup artist Valeria Ferreira applied a gaze-encasing wash of apricot eye shadow and a swipe of peachy lipstick to catch the warmer tones of Taylor-Joy’s sequined dress, generous black lashes lending to the headband’s retro sensibilities.
Hints at the burgeoning trend began at Markarian’s spring 2022 show, where models’ updos were finished in bows made of the same fabric as their dresses. Then, in classic Chanel fashion, the house’s Métiers d’Art collection came with a wealth of artfully placed black bows, while Giambattista Valli’s prefall presentation featured a more idiosyncratic take, black bows secured upside down at the crown and in great number throughout a given updo.
So, whether you prefer yours looped in a flourish or twined neatly around polished lengths, wrap your mind around the ribbon—the addition is sure to play a part in your accessory approach this year.
