Britney Spears made her return to music on Friday, joining forces with Elton John for her first new song in six years.
“Hold Me Closer,” a recreation of Elton’s 1992 hit “Tiny Dancer,” has already climbed to No. 1 on iTunes in the U.S., as well as several other countries. Less than 24 hours after its release, TMZ reports Britney is busy working on a music video for her and Elton’s collaborative single.
Spears turned down an opportunity to appear at this weekend’s MTV VMAs “because of a scheduling conflict that keeps her in Los Angeles,” a source told the outlet. It’s unclear if Britney and Elton will appear in the music video together.
“Hold Me Closer” marks Spears’ first new material since her 2016 album Glory, and the first since the end of her 13-year conservatorship last November.
Britney took to social media on Friday afternoon to share her reaction to the song’s success. “Hello Sir Elton John we are like No. 1 in 40 countries,” she said in a video. “Holy shit! I’m in the tub right now and I’m about to go have the best day ever and I hope you’re well.”
Elton responded to the video, writing, “Hey Britney!! Thank you for this message. You’ve made my day!! Hope everyone has the best day dancing to our song! #HoldMeCloser.”
