Iris hits the gym regularly. “I try to go twice a week, sometimes three times,” she told People. “I have a [trainer] so he helps show me what I have to do to work out the body part I want to work, and if I’m on my own, I run and I do ab [exercises] and a lot of squats!”
Her favorite exercises? Planks and crunches. Her go-to workout might include planking for one minute, side planking on each side for another, doing crunches for an entire song length, and then lots of squats. “When I travel, I try to work out before I go to bed,” she told People. “I’ll do 10 minutes of abs one day and 10 minutes of butt the next day. There’s a lot of videos on YouTube, and I use 10 minutes to do one part of my body.”
One thing you will always find at one of Iris’ workouts? Music. “It’s my motivation,” she said about why she has to listen to tunes while exercising. A chorus can be a motivator also. “Research shows that the brain benefits from the cognitive activity and exercise, social interaction, and sense of meaning and purpose that creative activities such as singing in a chorus provide. Specifically, we encourage those living with MCI to engage in mental activities that challenge you to think a little faster and that are new in some way,” says the Mayo Clinic.
“I love food,” Iris admits to People. How does she ensure healthy eating? “The most important thing is I cook, so I can choose what I want to add, and not use a lot of salt and things like that. I don’t have a diet, but I try to eat a lot during breakfast and lunch and not a lot for dinner.”
“My typical breakfast is oats with milk and banana,” Iris told People. “If I have time I cook some eggs, but I eat only the whites. For lunch, I like doing pasta with tomatoes, avocado and chicken. I try to eat a lot of protein. For dinner I’ll have soup with bread.”
Another trick Mittenaere has to stay in shape? She walks whenever she can. “And don’t use the elevator — use the stairs!” She also maintains a very active lifestyle, sharing photos of her outdoor adventures on social media.
